Centre Dufferin New Horizons Club is a not for profit organization offering social, recreational and volunteer opportunities for older adults (55+) in Shelburne and surrounding area. The Club was created in 1978 to provide a central location for seniors to socialize and participate in recreational activities.
A Volunteer Board of eleven Directors oversees the programs. There are no paid employees of the Club.
The objectives of the Club are:
1 . To promote and serve the well-being and happiness of senior citizens and those approaching retirement.
2. To enable aging and aged, handicapped, chronically ill persons to remain in familiar settings and retain involvement with their community.
Our primary activities include weekly card games, shuffleboard, yoga and an art group. Members of the club volunteer to plan, organize and bbq a lunch in the early summer before the summer break and in the fall to welcome everyone back. We also plan a catered annual Christmas dinner.
Our members volunteer to plan and organize bus trips that enable our members to dine out and integrate with community events such as live theatre, botanical gardens, butterfly conservatory, and boat cruises to enjoy the colors of fall.
Our members identify new programs and services that could be of interest to other members. We investigate feasibility and implement where possible.
We are pleased to inform we have received funding from the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program to enable us to expand our programs and services. We are going to expand our horizons with eight lunch and learns and two new weekly programs.
We will be expanding opportunities for social dining and expansion of their awareness by introducing lunch and learn sessions. We will be recruiting speakers on relevant topics such as oral health, elder abuse, frauds and scam, safe driving in winter, paramedic community programs, fire safety in the home and volunteer income tax programs. These lunch and learns will be starting in May.
Thursday, May 7th 11:30 Lunch catered by Main St. Café and Guest Speaker Dave Pratt, Shelburne Fire Department speaking on Fire safety in the Home. This press release will be shared at this event.
Our members have identified two new programs that will offer physical and mental stimulation and encouraging social participation.
Line Dancing will be introduced on Monday, May 11th 3:30-4:30 pm with Amie Andison-Boyle. Amie currently teaches classes at Aliston’s 54+ and Briar Hill, Wasaga Beach, Barrie and Orangeville.
Tai Chi-Qigong will be introduced on Thursday, May 14th 10:00-11:00 am. with Joseph Breitner. Joe currently teaches at the Mono Community Centre.
We produce a monthly newsletter to keep our members informed about the activities and events being planned. In 2025 we implemented a website which is keeping both our community and our members informed about our activities and events. It also helps recruit new community members to join our club. https://Newhorizonsshelburne.ca
